Background: As research emerges on a particular treatment, organized bodies of medical professional published guidelines or recommendations to help guide physicians and health care professionals to provide a standard of care. The authors perform exhaustive reviews of the published medical literature and provide a “best practices” guideline based on that information.
Report Results: The Hungarian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons published a report on the use a fermented wheat germ product called Avemar™ and its role in the treatment of head and neck cancers. After reviewing laboratory and clinical trial data, they conclude that the wheat germ product “has not shown toxic effects either in acute, sub-acute, or chronic toxicological tests.” Moreover, Avemar™ did not cause any adverse effects in humans for up to 5 years (the longest time formally tested). It is also free of drug-drug interactions, including interactions with immune system drugs or chemotherapeutics. In addition to commenting on safety, the authors review data on efficacy as an adjunctive treatment for cancer. When added to traditional cancer therapies, the fermented wheat germ product helps patients with advanced cancers of the oral cavity (and other cancers) to have better quality of life, slower disease progression, and better overall survival.
Conclusion: The Hungarian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons recommends Avemar™ as an important adjunct (additional treatment) in the overall management of tumorous diseases of the oral cavity.
